The world’s biggest automakers of BMW and Toyota have been working together on designing a series of three sports cars. While details are scarce, rumour has it that they have already been working on this combined project for years now and are likely to continue this partnership to at least 2020.
Their combined knowledge, resources and personnel are looking to make serious headways into the research and development of fuel cells, lightweight technology and lithium-air batteries. Whereby, the models manufactured from this combined endeavour are expected to be used as templates to spawn further vehicles for each of the respective brands.
The end product of this extensive research process is expected to take the form of a series of futuristic sports cars according to Johan van Zyl, the director of Toyota’s European operations. He advised that all three projects were progressing well, with the first of the models expected to be launched in the near future. A spokesman for BMW confirmed this report “The whole study before that, on what kind of platform, on what kind of architecture, that’s been progressing quite well. We haven’t yet decided to give the green light to the project, but it’s coming up”. While the technical feasibility study was said to be completed by November 2014, the high profile operation has now reached the concept phase of development.
Lips are still tight as to where the model might be built and when production will start, but inside sources have confirmed the use of a turbocharged four cylinder engine, that could be a replica of the BMW Z4 and the Toyota Supra with a turbocharged V6.
