A street race between exotic luxury cars on the boulevard avenues of Beverly Hills is revving up significant annoyance from the local residents. Footage was captured of a yellow Ferrari and a white Porsche racing through residential streets, ignoring stop signs and speeding through crossings.
However despite the anger of the residents, at least one of the drivers is claiming diplomatic immunity, making it impossible for them to be charged. The yellow Ferrari has license plates that are from the Middle East state of Qatar, a location where diplomatic immunity will make it impossible to prosecute them as they are protected by an international treaty.
Legal expert Steve Meister confirmed that this was indeed the case “If police deem these crimes misdemeanors, then either the officers had to have witnessed the crimes themselves or the neighbors who witnessed the crimes have to be willing to place the suspects under citizen’s arrest”. While Beverly Hills Police have advised that the U.S. State Department is using diplomatic channels to assist detectives in progressing the case to make charges, in the meantime there are neither police or local residents who have been able to act on either of these two scenarios.
Despite the frustration of residents who would like to see these actions stopped immediately and the drivers prosecuted, the police’s hands are largely tied. Unfortunately, the footage does not show the faces of the drivers and therefore police cannot determine if diplomatic immunity applies. But as Meister says “it’s a moot point as an officer wasn’t present to witness the race”.
In the meantime the only recompense to local residents is seeing the footage at the end of the clip, which shows a $1 million Ferrari smoking up as it limps its way back up the driveway.
