Which city has the highest density of Tesla Supercharges in the world? You guessed it, Hong Kong, where in light of this fact, it was not surprising that the launch of the latest Model S P85D was eagerly welcomed on Tuesday.
Hong Kong boasts no less than 8 electric power stations, that combined comprise a total of 36 supercharger stalls for the use of standard Model S owners who predominantly live within 20 minutes’ drive of locally based stations.
This distinct advantage of infrastructure found in Hong Kong as compared to that in mainland China, goes along way to explain the sharp difference between the popularity of Tesla between the mainland and its neighboring autonomous territory. According to the South China Morning Post, the lack of electric power stations in China has been identified as the primary reason as to why demand has been so low, testament by a rare backlog of cars in its inventory there.
However in the city that arguably loves the pure electric car more than anywhere else, Tesla Motors is seeing a steady rise in sales for its entire production line, most notable in the recent launch of the Model S P85D. Before Tesla entered the market there were less than 600 electric vehicles (EV) in Hong Kong. However within less than 3 years the number of EV’s in Hong Kong has almost tripled with a delivery record of 2,250 according to government statistics.
According to Isabel Fan, country director of Tesla Motors Hong Kong “Since [last July], we saw a significant increase in the awareness and acceptance toward electric vehicles,” She continues to assert that “We are proud to be a part … in accelerating the world’s transition to sustainable transport”.
