The new Mercedes G-Class comes with many similarities to previous versions while still upgrading enough to keep things current. Mercedes recently debuted the second-generation G-Class at the 2018 North American International Auto Show in Detroit. While it still closely resembles the off-roading vehicle that was launched 38 years ago, there are some distinct updates recently accomplished. To stick to its roots, Mercedes chose not to do dramatic updates to the G-Class but instead opted for mild changes. In fact, at first glance, you might not notice a difference at all.<\/p>\n
The exterior changes are subtle, such as the shorter, wider intakes located in the lower fascia. They’ve also integrated everything into the G-Class’s headlight including the LED running lights. This gives the G-Class a cleaner appearance. By moving the windshield wipers lower, the view from inside the cabin is also clearer.<\/p>\n
Overall, the Mercedes G-Class has grown in size; adding almost 5 inches to the width, 2 inches to the length and an additional quarter-inch to the ground clearance. Compared to the previous model with the same engine, Mercedes was able to drop almost 375 pounds with this newer model. There are also some technical changes to the G-Class. The front axle now features an independent suspension while the low range gear ratio changed from 2.1: 1 to 2.9: 1.<\/p>\n
Unlike the exterior, Mercedes went for dramatic changes to the interior. The only aspect that truly stayed the same is the passenger side grab handle. There are now two 12.3-inch displays integrated neatly in the dashboard, jet-turbine inspired gauges and plenty of room for passengers. At launch, there will only be one model available; the G550.
