Range Rover Defender info
Designed for hardcore off-road adventures, the new Range Rover Defender will delight those ready to take on mountains, rocky terrain and wade through rivers. It is also great to drive in the city and show off your sense of adventure.
The Exterior
The new exterior takes inspiration from the old model but with some modern enhancements. It still has that boxy look that is ideal for squeezing between trees and narrow cliffs. The chassis is an all-new aluminium monocoque that is immensely strong. The short overhangs help with off-road navigation. Notice that the panels are not perfectly flat but have stylish curves that look smart and solid.
The must-have spare wheel is attached to the tailgate on a hinged door with a soft closing touch. On the top side of each door are alpine lights adding to classy new look.
The car comes in two models, the shorter dinky 90 with 2 doors and the longer more serious 110 with 4 doors.
The Interior
The interior is a huge step up from the old defender. The seats are comfortable and very car-like, giving the feeling of a sedan. The dash is covered with a soft leatherette with contrast stitching. Textured material lines the doors, giving a plush feeling. Exposed screw-heads and exposed metal strips add to the industrial feel – this is designed for hard core driving after all. Hidden amongst the plush materials are grab handles and places to hold onto when you do hit those bumpy roads.
The 110 offers ample space in the back for 3 passengers with leg room and head room. The boot is a massive 857 litres for all your luggage and sporting gear. You can also lower the boot for easy packing.
For the driver there is a 10 inch touchscreen and surround-view cameras for added safety.
The Drive
The new Defender sports a power-packed 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine that makes 296 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque. Other models offer a 3.0-litre six-cylinder diesel option with a choice of plug-in hybrids.
This model is ramped up for off-road capabilities. It offers an approach angle of 38 degrees at the front and 40 degrees at the back. It can climb a slope with a 38 degree angle. Wading through water is a breeze, it can go as deep as 900mm and the electrical system can remain wet for up to an hour without damage.
For main numbers, the Defender will do 0 to 100km/h in 9.1 seconds and reach top speeds of 188km/h. The drive is agile and compliant with a well-weighted steering wheel. This is a fun car to drive, both on off-roads and on the asphalt.
