In 1967, construction began on a dam that would flood areas of the River Homem, providing hydro-electrical power to the region. A small village in its path was destined to be drowned. Amid some protest, in 1971, the last of 300 people left their homes and the water was released to submerge the 2000 year old town. When the weather is very dry, the ancient walls, windows and doors of the village emerge from beneath the water. Visit the museum in nearby São João do Campo and take a trip in a glass bottomed boat to see the eerie town under the murky water.
