Tesla advised yesterday that it would finally be delivering the first of its Model X SUV models before the end of this month. But if that wasn’t enough to set the electric car world into a whirlwind of excitement, Elon Musk commented on his twitter page, plans to manufacture the Model 3, a smaller and lower cost sedan that will go into production in two years from now.
The delivery date of the Model X which was initially set for 2014 has been postponed a number of times, where like all Tesla’s production cars to date, there have been delays getting them off the production lines and into their customer’s garages.Tesla Motors first announced its plan to produce the Model X electric cross over utility back in February 2012, without even yet having wiped its hands clean from having gotten the Model S out the door for the first time. However, between then and now, Tesla advises that it has received over 20,000 orders for the Model X, making it arguably the world’s most anticipated car.
The Model X has many of the same features shared with its older sibling the Model S, particularly in relation to styling and technology. However its point of differentiation is that it is marketed as a “family vehicle” being a large SUV that has a focus on practicality with roof hinged “falcon doors”, that open upwards, not outwards. Not surprisingly this car has enjoyed much attention and popularity from the get-go.
Meanwhile while not much at this stage is known about the Model 3, it has been tagged as the “more affordable electric car”, giving those interested enough time to save their change in time for its release. The Model 3 is to be unveiled in March 2016, and at $35,000, those interested will be able to place their orders from the time of its launch.
