Much anticipated and highly awaited, the day finally came for the unveiling of the Ferrari 488 Spider at the Frankfurt Auto Show. The very image of automotive beauty in the colour of Azure blue. Like clockwork this Ferrari stole the limelight as its retractable hard top folded in a mere 14 seconds into the boot of the car.
The folks at Ferrari claim significant accomplishments in the creation of the Ferrari 488. The quickly packaged hard top roof is just the beginning of a role call of accomplishments, where a super light weight that still manages to keep the wind and elements out, is also on the list.
No mere mild mannered creature of the road, this supercar drives with a poignant purpose engineered with a 3.9 liter turbocharged V8 engine that produces 660hp at 8,000 rpm. An apparently requisite boost of energy that sees this supercar sprinting from 0-100 km/h in 3 seconds. The roar of the drive against gravity is distinct, designed with a new exhaust that gives it a unique character from its brother the 488 coupe. The Spider’s powertrain is propelled through a seven speed dual clutch transmission to the Variable Torque Management system situated in the rear that distributes power to the wheels.
Ferrari’s particular focus for the 488 Spider was maximum efficiency, which appears to have been achieved in impressive style. Aerodynamic enhancements include intake ports that are shaped to optimise airflow, an ion-sensing system that measures air currents and an advanced diffuser and a sculpted under tray that gives the car stability, planting it firmly to the road.
However for the time being, all you can do with this azure jewel is covet it. The Ferrari 488 Spider will only be available for sale well into 2016, where you can make it your very own for just 270,000 gold dollar coins.
