Read moreWhen you arrive, head for the Puszta Animal Park. The unique long-horned grey cattle called puszta can be seen here and the weird curly-haired Mangalica pig. Then continue to the Hortobágy Wild Animal Park which hosts wild horses, pelicans, wolves, jackals and vultures. Bird lovers can catch a glimpse of eagle, stork, heron, kite, kestrel and spoonbill. Climb the watchtower overlooking the Hortogáby Great Fishponds.
Visit the Máta Stud Farm and have a fun ride in a horse-drawn wagon train across the prairie. See hundreds of semi-wild horses herded past you and watch Hungarian csikósok perform crazy tricks on horseback.
On the way back stop at the Nine-Hole Bridge, which was built in 1833 and spans the marshy Hortobágy River. It is a famous venue for artists who sit on the banks and sketch this fabulous long stone structure.
Stop for lunch at Hungary's most celebrated Inn, the Hortobágyi Csárda. This ancient roadside inn was built at the end of the 18th century and was used by salt traders on their way from the Tisza River to Debrecen. Listen to Gypsy violinists play as you tuck into your bogrács gulyas, a hearty goulash served in a small kettle. If you are brave you can try a taste of the famous grey cattle you saw at the Puszta Animal Park.
Head back to Budapest for a night at the magnificent boutique Aria Hotel.
