This famous building was originally used for commodities exchange, mainly cotton and textiles, that started in 1729. It was founded by the merchant Thomas Gresham to act as a centre of commerce for the City of London. The building is well known for its trapezoidal shape. It was extensively damaged in the 1996 Manchester bombings and has twice been destroyed by fire. The site was occupied by the Lloyd's insurance market for nearly 150 years.
