This iconic railway line links Zermatt to the station at the summit of the Gornergrat. It is the second highest railway in Europe, at a height of 3089 metres. This was the first electric railway in Switzerland and the inaugural journey took place in 1898. Leave your car outside Zermatt, no cars are allowed in the town, and climb aboard the little red train. The 30 minute trip climbs up into the mountains and will leave you astounded at the magnificent scenery and the picture-perfect sight of the imposing Matterhorn mountain. You can hop on and off along the route and stop for a meal and a drink at the quaint restaurants at Riffelberg or Riffelalp.
