Read moreGuimarães, founded in 950 AD is nicknamed the 'City Where Portugal Was Born'. This ancient settlement was awarded Unesco World Heritage Status for its historic medieval centre. Stroll around and admire the architecture. See the Guimarães Castle, an important historic symbol. Visit Citania de Briteiros, one of the Iron Age Villages, and be awed at this beautiful and mysterious site.
Continue to the Dukes of Braganza Palace built for Alfonso, Count of Barcelos between 1420 and 1422. Drive up the Penha Mountain for stunning city views and then head off to Viana do Castelo nestling on the banks of the Lima River. See the Basilica of Santa Luzia on Mount St. Luzia. Built in 1903, it was inspired by the Sacré Coeur de Montmartre in Paris. Go up to the pinnacle for panoramic views of the city.
When you come down, visit the amazing Gil Eanes Naval Museum. It is a floating naval hospital and is now open to the public. Take some photos at the Fountain at Praça da República in Republic Square. This lovely granite fountain is decorated with detailed carved figures and was built in the 16th century by João Lopes.
After lunch the ladies must do some shopping. This city is famous for Viana Crockery and beautiful filigree jewellery. Visit the Factory in Meadela for a tour to learn about this age-old craft and see the Viana Municipal Museum where lovely items are on display.
Dinner must be a seafood risotto at the Barquinha do Agra Restaurante before returning to Porto.
