Step behing the wheel of your Mercedes V-Class rental and head inland towards Montserrat on a scenic hour and a half drive. When you arrive, stop at the famous Santa Maria de Montserrat Monastery where the iconic statue of the Virgin of Montserrat, also known as the Moreneta, is housed. Dating back to the 12th century, she is carved from dark wood and sits holding the baby Jesus in her arms. While in the Sanctuary, delight in listening to oldest children's choir, La Escolania de Montserrat.
Nature lovers can stroll around the beautiful paths of the Montserrat Parkland and enjoy the unspoiled beauty. Take the funicular to the top of the mountain and be thrilled by the panoramic views of the lush valleys. When you come back down, settle in for lunch at the Restaurant Abat Cisneros. It is charmingly located inside the old stables used for the monastery in the 16th century. Order a traditional Catalan meal of hearty fresh seafood.
After lunch, drive to Sant Sadurni d'Anoia, the capital of Cava, to visit some of the largest biggest underground wine cellars in Europe. This quaint town is situated in the world renowned wine growing region of Penedes. Take a tasting tour at the Freixenet Winery and learn how the famous Cava wine is made. Make sure you buy a few bottles to take home!
Relax and spend the night at the family-run Hotel Fonda Neus, before enjoying the nice drive as you are setting off back to the city.
