The Old Vic has a varied history going back to the early 19th Century when it first opened in 1818. In 1821 a looking-glass curtain was installed made up of 62 mirror panels supported by a massive golden frame and weighing 5 tons. This novelty curtain caused a stir but was proved to be a hazard and was dismantled. In 2003 Kevin Spacey was appointed the first Artistic Director and the Theatre took world stage.
