The town of Poseidonia, later named Paestum, was built by Greek colonists in 600 BC. It prospered as a city and was taken over by the Romans, after which it collapsed with the fall of the Roman Empire.
As you approach Paestum, you will be awestruck by the three imposing Greek temples, rising up into the skies. These dramatic temples are among the greatest monuments in Italy. The smallest was dedicated to Athena and later became a Christian church. The oldest is known as the Temple of Hera and the third is the magnificent imposing Temple of Neptune.
