The village was founded in 1519 by the Bishop of Grasse. He brought Italian artisans into the area to make use of local clay for art and to boost the reputation of the area.
Take a walking tour around the old village, which dates back to the 16th century. The streets are designed in a classic grid pattern and some of the original stores and homes have now sunk below street level over time. See the former Town Hall with its original fountain and tower.
Spend time in the Church of Valbonne. This Romanesque abbey church dates back to the 13th century and historians will be delighted to discover its Chalaisien style of architecture. Ornate sculptures and the detailed architecture will thrill. Visit the museum which showcases examples of daily life in the village over the years. After Valbonne drive on to Biot. It is famous for its pottery and glass-blowing crafts that have been part of its history for hundreds of years. Stroll around the walled town and explore the quaint streets and hidden nooks. This town is known for its cats! They are everywhere and make for great and unusual photographs.
Visit the glass-maker, the Verrerie de Biot and stop in at the ceramic museum. Art lovers must not miss the Fernand Léger museum, filled with works by this artist and featuring a magnificent ceramic façade.
