Marseille is home to truly astonishing calanques, a stretch of rocky capes that rise from the sparkling turquoise waters of the Mediterranean. The most famous and largest calanque in the area is the Calanque de Sormiou, a cave adorned with prehistoric wall paintings from around 20,000 BC, discovered by diver Henri Cosquer when he swam to it through a 150 meter-long passage, 36 meters underwater. Although the calanque is a protected historical monument and closed to the public, many more calanques are available in the area where you can soak up the sun, take a long hike or kayak over the cobalt-blue waters. See climbers dangle from sheer rock faces and bobbing fishing boats at the windswept Cap Morgiou and finish the day there with a romantic dinner at the Nautic Bar.
Drive the ever-sexy LaFerrari and test its dangerous curves, extreme speed and excitement as you make your way along the coast and admire the emerald waters as they hit the pebbled beach of Calanque d’En-Vau. For the hardcore adventurous, a three-hour trail leads down from the Doigt de Dieu, a giant rock pinnacle guarding the entrance to the calanque to En-Vau.
