Time for breakfast. La Spezia is a 50km drive from Forte dei Marmi, along the scenic A12. It is a major shipping port, offering a rich maritime history. Your first stop is the The Naval Technical Museum where you can view a huge array of historical displays and artefacts. Learn all about the Italian Naval Forces and view old cannons, parts of battle ships, underwater diving equipment and more.
Drive to the Waterfront, the place to show off your stylish car. Park and take a stroll along the promenade, a popular spot for locals and tourists to spend time in sun and eat an exotic Gelato. Stop at the beautiful Basilica of Santa Maria Assunta, a 15th Century Church that was only completed in the 1900’s. It has a lovely marble façade in green and white stripes. Also not to be missed is the San Giorgio Castle which you find when driving along the winding Via XXVII Marzo. It offers great views and a fascinating archaeological museum with artefacts dating back to the Copper Age.
The amazing Cinque Terre is made up of five villages, hanging perilously off the high cliffsides. The villages are filled with vividly coloured buildings and small winding streets that lead down to the sea. This is a unique and breathtaking sight, perfect to explore on a sunny day. Start with a great Ligurian lunch at Belforte on Via Guidoni. This classy venue is located in an 1th Century castle overlooking the sea. Order the housemade pesto and a half-carafe of local wine.
After lunch, set off to explore. Visit the Church of Santa Margherita d'Antiochia, it stands out with its 40m high octagonal tower. Then stroll around the narrow streets and see the City Walls and the Convent. Time for a dip! Head down to the beach and cool off in the ocean. The water is warm and calm and you can even take a boat trip out into the bay with a local fisherman.
You can decide to spend the night in the village or drive back to Pisa.
