Drive to Modena in the heart of the Italian Motor Valley

Set off on an hour trip to Modena, your first stop. This city is known as the birthplace of Ferrari, Lamborghini and Maserati. It is a car lovers dream and your first stop is the famous Enzo Ferrari Museum, afuturistic glass-walled building with exhibits on the work of Enzo Ferrari and his iconic sports cars. Stop at the Duomo di Modena, a Romanesque Cathedral with a bell tower that is a city landmark. Look out for the rose windows, crafted in to 1400’s.

Head to Parma for a delicious lunch

Drive along the A1 to Parma in the heart of the Emilia-Romagna region. This is a food lovers paradise, where many of the world’s top culinary dishes are created. Your drive is around 65km and will take about an hour. In Parma you will find the renowned Prosciutto di Parma and Parmigiano Reggiano cheese. Take a tour of a local cheese factory to learn how cheese is made. Then, relax at a pavement café and sample some of the local fare, paired with regional Lambrusco wines.

Parma is an enchanting city filled with ancient history. Visit the magnificent Duomo, a Romanesque basilica that dates from the 12th Century. It features a huge fresco of the Assumption of the Virgin. Don’t miss out on the beautiful early Christian floor mosaics. Then visit the Baptistery, next to the Cathedral, building started on this massive marble structure in 1196 and took more than a century to complete.

Head south to the coast and the hanging villages of Cinque Terre

The next leg of your trip is a two and a half hour drive along the A15 to Cinque Terre. This amazing landscape features five villages, nestling perilously towards on the towering cliffs overlooking the ocean. The vibrantly coloured buildings, churches and quaint shops are interspersed by a narrow streets that wind their way down to the water. Here, you can see fishing boats leaving and arriving with the latest catch. Spend the night in the village of Riomaggiore. The Hotel Villa Argentina offers stunning views and well appointed rooms. Drive back to Bologna in the morning after a scrumptious breakfast.
